Who Will You Become?
Not every story begins in darkness. Across Montana Falls, thousands of people are simply getting on with their lives. They work, love, struggle, celebrate, make mistakes and dream of something better. They build homes, establish businesses, raise families and find their place in a world that is constantly changing.
As a human, your story is entirely your own. You need no special bloodline, supernatural gift or extraordinary calling to make a difference. You need only a character, an idea and somewhere to begin.
The frontier is yours to shape.
There is no single way to live in Montana Falls. Perhaps you dream of owning a successful business, making a name for yourself in the law, or building a quiet life far away from the troubles of civilisation. Perhaps you have rather less respectable ambitions.
- A Business Owner — Open a general store, saloon, hotel, restaurant, theatre, stable, trading post or any other venture you can imagine. Build a reputation, employ others and make your establishment a part of the community.
- A Rancher or Farmer — Raise livestock, cultivate the land, manage a homestead or make your living from the resources of the frontier.
- A Tradesperson — Become a blacksmith, tailor, carpenter, gunsmith, doctor, undertaker, mechanic or craftsman. Put your skills to work and make a living through your trade.
- A Lawkeeper — Serve as a sheriff, deputy, marshal, detective or other representative of the law. Keep the peace, investigate crimes and decide what justice means in your community.
- An Outlaw — Rob, steal, smuggle, con and scheme your way through life. Form a gang, make connections or become a name whispered in the wrong company.
- A Professional — Pursue medicine, law, journalism, education, politics, science, engineering or any number of other professions. Knowledge and ambition can be just as powerful as a six-shooter.
- An Entertainer — Sing, perform, dance, write, paint, play music or take to the stage. Bring a little culture and excitement to the frontier.
- A Traveller or Adventurer — Explore unfamiliar country, hunt, fish, guide expeditions, trade between settlements or simply see where the road takes you.
- A Community Figure — Become a preacher, teacher, community organiser, philanthropist, socialite, politician or someone people turn to when they need help.
- Something Entirely Your Own — The possibilities above are only suggestions. If you have an idea for a character or occupation that belongs in the world, we want to hear about it.
Your character does not need to fit neatly into a profession, either. People have hobbies, relationships, ambitions, responsibilities and secrets that extend well beyond their work.
Life differs from one settlement to another. Distance, weather, local work, transport, and community ties all shape how people make a living and what they can reach. Explore the World of Montana Falls for a sense of place.
The People Make the Frontier.
A character is so much more than what they do for a living.
Perhaps you're a respected member of society with a rather scandalous private life. Perhaps you're a struggling parent trying to give your children a better future, or a newcomer hoping to leave an old life behind.
Build friendships, fall in love, start a family, form rivalries, establish communities or find yourself caught up in the affairs of others. You can pursue wealth, influence, knowledge, adventure or simply a little happiness.
You can be kind, cruel, ambitious, generous, foolish, brilliant or wonderfully ordinary. Your character's story doesn't have to be grand to be worth telling.
Your Choices Leave Their Mark.
Montana Falls is not a world waiting for someone else to make its history.
Businesses can grow into institutions, discoveries can change what people understand about the world, and individuals can influence the direction of entire communities.
The Kindred may be establishing their own society, and strange things may occasionally stir beyond the understanding of ordinary people, but the frontier has a life of its own. You may encounter the supernatural, become involved in its affairs, or live your entire life without ever discovering what lies beneath the surface.
Neither path is more important than the other.
Human characters are not spectators in someone else's story. They are part of the history being written here.
Make Yourself at Home.
Perhaps you'll arrive in Saint Denis with nothing but a suitcase and a plan. Perhaps you'll inherit a ranch, open a little shop in Rhodes or find yourself making a living in the streets of Valentine. Maybe you'll become a respected figure in your community, or perhaps the sort of person your neighbours would rather avoid.
Whatever you choose, there is room for it here.
You don't need to be extraordinary to tell an extraordinary story.
Welcome to the frontier. Make yourself at home.
