An introduction to the world, the lore, and the stories we tell

The Moonstone
Chronicle

Every world has a history. Every character has a story. A Chronicle is something more: a collection of lives, choices and experiences that gradually become something larger than any one of them.

The Moonstone Chronicle

An Introduction to the World, the Lore, and the Stories We Tell.

Every world has a history. Every character has a story. But a Chronicle is something more: a collection of lives, choices and experiences that gradually become something much larger than any one of them.

The Moonstone Chronicle is a collaborative roleplay experience set within the world of Red Dead Redemption, drawing inspiration from the rich and varied universe of World of Darkness. Here, the ordinary and supernatural exist side by side, old traditions meet new ambitions, and the future of Montana Falls is yet to be written.

Whether you're familiar with the World of Darkness or discovering it for the first time, you're welcome here. You don't need to know every piece of lore or have years of roleplay experience behind you. All you need is an interest in telling a good story.

More than a setting. More than a story.

What Is a Chronicle?

In tabletop roleplaying, a Chronicle is an ongoing collection of interconnected stories, shaped by the characters and players who inhabit a shared world.

Unlike a traditional story with a single protagonist and predetermined ending, a Chronicle belongs to everyone involved. Individual characters have their own ambitions, relationships and journeys, but their lives inevitably intersect with those of others. One person's decisions might create opportunities for another, change the course of an organisation or leave consequences that reshape the world around them.

That's the philosophy behind The Moonstone Chronicle.

There is no single protagonist, no predetermined ending and no expectation that every character must follow the same path. Some stories will be grand and far-reaching; others will be quiet, personal and intimate. Both have a place here.

We want the world to respond to its inhabitants, and for the things that happen within it to become part of its history.

The Chronicle Writes Itself.

The monsters are real. So are the people living among them.

The World of Darkness

The World of Darkness is a collection of interconnected tabletop roleplaying settings exploring a world much like our own, but with something darker lurking beneath its surface.

Vampires manipulate mortal society from the shadows. Hunters discover that the monsters of folklore are very real. Shapeshifters wage desperate struggles against forces threatening the natural world. Mages challenge the very nature of reality, while the restless dead linger beyond the reach of the living.

Each game explores a different perspective on this hidden world, with its own lore, supernatural beings, conflicts and themes.

Some of the best-known settings include:

  • Vampire: The Masquerade — Explore the existence of the Kindred, immortal creatures sustained by blood and entangled in centuries of politics, intrigue, ambition and hunger.
  • Hunter: The Reckoning — Follow ordinary mortals whose sudden awakening reveals the supernatural horrors hidden amongst humanity.
  • Werewolf: The Apocalypse — Discover the Garou, shapeshifters caught in an ongoing struggle to defend the natural world against corruption and destruction.
  • Mage: The Ascension — Explore a reality shaped by belief, where extraordinary individuals challenge the boundaries of what is possible.
  • Wraith: The Oblivion — Enter the world of the restless dead, whose existence remains tethered to the living and the things they cannot leave behind.

These are just a handful of the possibilities within the wider World of Darkness.

Our current focus is on Vampire: The Masquerade and Hunter: The Reckoning, but we're enthusiastic about exploring other parts of the setting as the community grows.

Vampire: The Masquerade — 20th Anniversary Edition

Our Foundation

Our primary mechanical foundation is Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition (V20).

V20 provides the starting point for our Kindred lore, character creation, Disciplines, Clan abilities and many of the systems that underpin supernatural roleplay.

However, the World of Darkness has developed across numerous editions, each bringing its own interpretations, ideas and material to the table. We see no reason to limit ourselves to a single publication when other editions may offer something worthwhile.

We're happy to consider material from V20, Revised, V5 and earlier editions, alongside other relevant World of Darkness publications. Proposed material may require adaptation to fit our existing systems, setting and balance, but its original source alone won't be a reason to dismiss it.

V20 is our foundation, not our boundary.

Good ideas aren't confined to one edition.

Beyond the Core Books

One of the things we love about the World of Darkness is just how much there is to explore. Between its many editions, sourcebooks, bloodlines, factions and supernatural beings, there's an enormous amount of material that can inspire interesting stories.

We don't expect to have everything implemented from the beginning, nor do we intend to close the door on possibilities simply because they aren't currently represented in the Chronicle.

Have an interesting character concept from a sourcebook we haven't explored? Interested in a particular bloodline, Clan, supernatural ability or aspect of the wider setting? We'd love to hear about it.

We can't promise every suggestion will be suitable, and some ideas may require more work than others, but we're always happy to have a conversation and see what might be possible.

Our approach is simple: if an idea is creative, enjoyable and fits within the world we're building, we're interested in exploring it.

The Chronicle can grow beyond its beginnings.

A World of Possibilities

While our current stories centre primarily around Kindred, Hunters and the ordinary people of Montana Falls, the wider World of Darkness offers plenty of room for other stories.

We'd love to see other supernatural settings find a home here in time. If someone arrives with an interest in bringing Werewolf, Mage, Wraith or another World of Darkness game into the Chronicle, we're open to exploring how we might facilitate that.

We don't currently have established communities for every splat, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Introducing another supernatural setting takes interested players, thoughtful planning and the necessary support to make it work.

But we'd rather see those possibilities develop naturally through community interest than rule them out before they've had a chance to begin.

You never know what the next chapter might bring.

Structure without unnecessary restrictions.

Our Approach to Storytelling

We believe rules are important. They provide consistency, establish expectations and help ensure everyone has a fair and enjoyable experience. But we also believe that rules should support storytelling, not prevent it.

Our approach is guided by three principles:

Collaboration

Roleplay is a shared experience. We encourage players to create opportunities for one another, embrace unexpected developments and recognise that the best stories are often those that nobody could have planned alone.

Creativity

We value intent, context and thoughtful interpretation. Not every situation can be anticipated by a rulebook, and we believe there's room for flexibility when an idea contributes something meaningful without compromising the experience of others.

Respect

Creative freedom comes with responsibility. We ask everyone to consider the people behind the characters, respect boundaries and approach disagreements with courtesy and understanding.

We don't expect every story to follow a predetermined path. We want players to have the freedom to experiment, develop their characters and discover where their choices lead, knowing that there's a framework in place to support the experience.

A living world, shaped by those who inhabit it.

The Chronicle Writes Itself

Montana Falls begins with an established history, existing communities and lives already in motion. Its towns, businesses, families and institutions don't exist solely to serve the supernatural stories unfolding around them.

But the world is changing.

Kindred are beginning to establish themselves, new powers are finding their footing, and some ordinary mortals are beginning to glimpse things they were never meant to see. The future of the region remains uncertain, and the balance of power has yet to be decided.

What happens next belongs to the people who live here.

A character might establish a business, build a family, uncover a forgotten secret, challenge an emerging authority or contribute to a discovery that changes how the world works. Some developments may affect an entire region; others may matter only to a handful of people.

Both are worth telling.

We want meaningful actions to leave meaningful consequences. The world should grow alongside its characters, and the history created through roleplay should become part of the Chronicle itself.

There's always room for another story.

Have an Idea?

You don't need to arrive with a fully developed character concept, an encyclopaedic knowledge of the World of Darkness or a grand plan for the future.

Perhaps you've found an interesting character concept in an old sourcebook. Perhaps there's a particular supernatural being you'd love to explore, or a system you'd like to see introduced. Maybe you simply have an idea that you think would make the world a little more interesting.

Whatever it is, come and talk to us.

We're always happy to hear suggestions, explore possibilities and work with players to bring good ideas to life. Not everything will be possible, but we'd much rather have the conversation than close the door on something before we've considered it.

The world is still taking shape, and there's plenty of room for new voices, new ideas and unexpected stories.

The pages are open. The future is unwritten. What will you bring to the Chronicle?
